Two fixtures on the LaGrange High coaching staff in recent years will have new jobs next fall.
Claude Giddens and David Pleasants, who have been coaching together at LaGrange since 2005, have both accepted new coaching positions.
Giddens is headed to Alabama to begin his second stint as the head coach at Highland Home High School, and Pleasants will be the offensive coordinator at East Coweta High School under former LaGrange head coach Steve Pardue.
Troup’s Chris Mitchem, meanwhile, has also accepted a new job, and he’ll be the defensive coordinator and wrestling coach at Drew High School in Clayton County next school year.
Giddens was the head coach at Callaway High from 2002 through 2004, and he joined the LaGrange High staff the following year.
Giddens has also had two stints as an assistant coach at Troup, and he spent two years in Cartersville as well.
Giddens, who has retired from the Troup County school system, was previously the head coach at Highland Home in 1999 and 2000.
Giddens told the newspaper in Greenville, Ala. he’s looking forward to building “a relationship with each kid, earn their respect and help them become the best possible person. It we can do that, the football will fall into place.”
Highland Home athletic director Doug Bailey told the Greenville newspaper Giddens was the ideal fit.
“We hope that can bring, obviously, winning football Bailey said. “But more than that, he’s someone who can lead our young men, develop them as quality guys and teach them how to be young men. We wanted someone who can lead our team not only on the field, but in all aspects of life.”
Pleasants, meanwhile, has been an assistant coach on two occasions at LaGrange, the first from 1988 until 1993, and the second from 2005 until last season.
He has also coached at Rome High, Peach County High, and Rockmart High where he was the head coach.
Pleasants has also served as the golf coach at LaGrange.
Pleasants coached alongside Pardue from 2002 until 2010, when Pardue left to become a coach at Kentucky.
After a year off from coach, Pardue accepted the head-coaching job at East Coweta, and he hired Pleasants to run his offense.
Mitchem was the defensive coordinator the past two seasons under Troup head coach Lynn Kendall, and he was also the head wrestling coach.
