LaGrange’s Ridge Purcell was the last man standing at the Pomp Shaefer Invitational in Carrollton this week.

The tournament, which draws an elite field of amateur golfers in the state, was held at Sunset Hills Country Club, and it lasted two rounds.

After the second round was completed, Purcell found himself in a tie with Eddie Hall for the top spot.

The two went to a playoff, and it wasn’t decided until the third hole when Hall three-putted for a bogey, and Purcell made his par put to win it.

Purcell shot a 69 in the first round despite a triple bogey on the sixth hole, and he carded a 71 on the second day.

Purcell was coming off a 23rd-place finish in the Georgia Amateur Championship, but he felt he would have finished much higher if he had putted better.

Purcell had back-to-back top-10 finishes in the Georgia Amateur in 2012 and 2013.

“After putting so poorly at the state am this year all I did for the next week was practice and try to have a better attitude toward putting,” Purcell said. “The only thing I had in my mind was to try and putt well.”

Purcell, a former standout golfer at LaGrange High, is an instructor at the First Tee facility in Troup County.

Purcell played collegiate golf at Armstrong Atlantic State in Savannah.
