Callaway’s Jessica Perkins delivered a masterpiece.
Perkins gave up base hits to the first two batters she faced in Friday’s game against Northside, but she was just about flawless after that.
Perkins ended up throwing a two-hitter, and after falling behind 2-0, Callaway rallied for a 5-2 victory.
It was the season opener for the Lady Cavaliers.
“The girls really competed,” Callaway coach Ashley Summerlin said. “I thought Jessica did a great job on the mound for us. She kept competing. And our defense was unbelievable for her.”
Both of Northside’s first two hitters ended up scoring, and Callaway trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning.
“We had base runners every inning but one,” Summerlin said. “We just couldn’t get the big hit.”
That all changed in the sixth inning.
Claudia Massey put the Lady Cavs on the board with an RBI single, and another run scored on an error.
With the bases loaded, Brittany Mitchell stepped to the plate and delivered a bases-clearing triple, and Callaway led 5-2.
That was plenty of support for Perkins, who shut Northside down over the final two innings to finish things off.
“It was a total team win,” Summerlin said. “Everybody made a good effort for us.”
Mitchell, playing third base, spear-headed the defensive effort with eight assists.
Offensively, Keke Talley did a lot of damage on the base paths as a pinch-runner.
Talley had two stolen bases, and she scored a run.
“She did everything off the bench we could ask her to do,” Summerlin said. “She did a great job for us.”
Callaway will try to move to 2-0 when it hosts Hardaway on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
