The Troup Lady Tigers will leap head-first into a new softball season this weekend.
Troup, which played a scrimmage game against Callaway last week, will play five games over the next two days in the Callaway Classic.
The tournament, which is being hosted by Callaway High, will be played at the Shuford Fields complex.
The 10-team tournament also includes Callaway and LaGrange.
The teams are divided into two five-team pools, and after pool play, the place games will be on Saturday.
The championship game is scheduled for Saturday at 4 p.m., and all of the other place games are at 2:15 p.m.
The teams in Pool A are Callaway, Bowdon, Northside Shaw and Troup, and the Pool B teams are LaGrange, Hardaway, Heard County, Landmark Christian and Manchester.
Troup played its preseason game more than a week ago, and it has been going at it hard in practice since then.
Troup coach Blair Shimandle thought with the inexperience on her team that practice time early on would be more beneficial than playing a game.
“I tried to start games a little bit later this year knowing we’re younger,” Shimandle said. “We only have one senior. I really wanted to give them time to get ready. In the past, we’ve kind of thrown them in.”
Troup will play its first tournament game against Bowdon at 5:45 p.m. today, and it will play Northside at 7:30 p.m.
Troup has two more pool games on Saturday, including a 9 a.m. matchup with Shaw.
Troup will wrap up pool play against Northside at 10:45 a.m.
Callaway, which is 1-1 after beating Northside and losing to Hardaway, will play its tournament opener today at 4 p.m. against Shaw, and it will play Bowdon at 7:30 p.m.
After playing Troup at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Callaway will complete pool play against Northside at 10:45 a.m.
LaGrange, like Troup, will be making its regular-season debut in the tournament.
LaGrange hosted Newnan in a preseason game on Wednesday.
LaGrange’s tournament opener is against Manchester at 4 p.m. today, and it will play Landmark Christian at 5:45 p.m.
On Saturday, LaGrange plays Heard County at 9 a.m., and its final pool game is against Hardaway at 10:45 a.m.
