Callaway head coach Pete Wiggin will be out on the practice field Wednesday morning doing what he does best, coaching football.
There will be one major difference, though.
Wiggins won’t be dealing with high-school players.
Instead, he and other members of his staff will be coaching young people no older than 14 during the fifth Pete Wiggins Football Camp.
The camp will be held from 9 a.m. until noon at the Callaway practice field, and the cost is $10.
The camp is open to children ages 8 to 14.
“We’ve been doing it for awhile now, and I’m looking forward to seeing the young guys out there,” Wiggins said.
Wiggins decided to offer the first youth camp in 2010, and he’s done it every year since.
“It’s about relationships and just having a good time meeting all those young people, and their parents, and of course those kids got to see our coaches and talk to them,” Wiggins said after last year’s camp. “It’s a fun day I know for the kids, but it’s a fun day for our coaches too.“
In addition to the coaches, a handful of players will also lend a hand.
Wiggins always calls upon some of his senior leaders to help out.
A year ago, quarterback Tez Parks and offensive lineman Brandon Sutton were two of the instructors.
“One of my favorite parts about the camp is seeing my younger guys work with the young people,” Wiggins said. “I think that’s real good for them.”
Wiggins said the camp is always a lot of fun.
“We sure enjoy it, and we look forward to doing that camp every year,” Wiggins said.
