There were some familiar faces, as well as some newcomers on the LaGrange High girls’ basketball team this summer.

The Lady Grangers, who recently wrapped up their busy summer schedule, return every key player from last season’s team that went 6-19, one year after making it to the second round of the state tournament.

The Lady Grangers were in nearly every game they played, though, so with all of the returning players, as well as some talented newcomers, they could be positioned to make some major strides next season.

The summer has given the returning players and the incoming freshmen a chance to really get to know each other, so that by the time preseason practice begins in October they’ll be able to hit the ground running.

“We have our upcoming ninth-graders for basketball that are going to be able to help us out this year,” LaGrange coach Jan Jones said. “We’re already getting experience with them, so it won’t be the first time they play together in October when we start.”

The team’s summer program began in the last week of May, shortly after the school year ended.

The summer kicked off with the players participating in a camp put on by the Columbus State coaches.

“We had Columbus State come down and do a team camp,” Jones said. “They do a site camp, and that’s where they come and they just instruct your girls and us as coaches just kind of walk around and take notes and that type of thing. The girls got lots of instruction.”

The team then began its summer schedule, and the Lady Grangers played a number of area teams, including Carrollton and Newnan.

“We hosted a couple of dates, along with going to several places,” Jones said. “We had a lot of games in. It was good.”
