With a new season a little more than a month away, the Callaway Cavaliers ventured to Carrollton on Tuesday as they continued to prepare for opening night.

The Cavaliers took part in a seven-on-seven passing tournament at West Georgia University, and it was a winning day.

The Cavaliers won all of their games, including the championship game against Eastside.

“The kids played well. It was a great day for us,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said.

There were 12 teams in the tournament, most of them from close by, but Oxford High also made the trip over from Alabama.

“The competition was good,” Wiggins said.

Playing in seven-on-seven competitions is a big part of what the Cavaliers do during the summer, and it’s especially important this summer since the team will have a new starting quarterback this fall.

Tez Parks, the starting quarterback the past two seasons, has graduated, and junior Dre Martin will be the new signal-caller.

Wiggins said Martin had a lot to do with the Cavaliers’ success on Tuesday.

“Dre Martin got better today,” Wiggins said. “He did a good job throwing the ball, and being a good leader.”

Wiggins also said Mike Moss, Braylon Sanders and Reeves Payne were standouts on the offensive side, and Aaron Clausell played well on defense.

Wiggins said some young players expected to contribute this fall had a productive day.

“It was good to see some guys, some younger guys play really well,” Wiggins said. “We’re excited about that.”

The Cavaliers will continue with their strength and conditioning program with a few other events mixed in the rest of the summer as they get ready for their season opener on Aug. 22 against LaGrange.

Callaway will play a preseason game against Greenville on Aug. 15 in Hogansville.

The Cavaliers will be looking to build on their extremely successful 2013 season where they went 12-2 and advanced to the state semifinals for the first time in school history.

“Friday nights are not a long ways away,” Wiggins said.
