With one championship already in hand, the Troup National 9-10-year-old all-stars will begin chasing another title this weekend.
Troup National will begin play in the Dixie Youth Baseball state tournament on Saturday in Wrens.
Troup National’s opening-round game will be against Albany International at 2 p.m.
The winner of the state tournament will advance to the Dixie Youth Baseball World Series.
“We’re ready to go,” Troup National coach Charles Mosley said. “Our last practice (was Thursday), and we’ll head out (today) for the opening ceremony.”
Troup National will look to duplicate its impressive performance from the district tournament.
Troup National went 4-0 at district, and that included a pair of hard-fought victories over Hogansville.
In the championship game, Troup National built a 6-0 lead against Hogansville, but the game was tied after five innings.
Troup National scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, and it held on for a 10-8 win.
Even though Troup National ran the table at district, Mosley said there was still plenty to work on afterward.
“Luckily we didn’t lose a game in district, but there were some areas we need to improve on, so we worked hard on those the past two weeks,” Mosley said. “Hopefully it pays off this week.”
The top two teams in the state tournament will meet in a best-of-three championship series, and the team that prevails will move on to the World Series in Lexington, S.C.
Troup National would obviously love to be that team.
“That’s our goal, but it’s one game at a time,” Mosley said.
