The Lady Warriors won a squeaker 45-44, while the Warriors put a little more distance between them and Trinity winning 67-53.
In the girls’ game, eighth-grader Tazsa Garrett-Hammett led the way by scoring 20 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and adding three blocked shots to her night’s work.
Guard Caitlynn Croft hit some critical free throws down the stretch to make the difference in the end, reported coach Britt Gaylor.
“To be honest, all of our players were great tonight,” Gaylor said. “Caitlynn Croft was big in the second half knocking down some huge free throws.”
Up by a single point with six seconds remaining in the game and the ball out-of-bounds, the Lady Warriors attempted to inbound the ball.
Trinity’s defense nearly forced a five-second call from game officials, but Gaylor managed to call for a timeout before an infraction could be whistled.
LaGrange was able to put the ball in play and run the clock out to secure the win without being fouled.
The Lady Warriors improved to 4-1 and rebounded from their first loss of the season on Saturday against Oak Mountain.
In the boys’ game, Gaylor was happy with the play of point guard Mayokun Oshinowo, who had a game-high 32 points.
Teammate Chase Wardlaw added 21 points.
While the Warriors did enough to remain unbeaten at 5-0, Gaylor said it wasn’t a crisp performance.
“We just didn’t play very well,” Gaylor said. “It was a grinding game. We kind of grinded this one out.”
Gaylor said a better defensive effort down the road will be required once the Warriors get into the thick of region play in January.
Next up for LaGrange Academy is rematch game when the Warriors travel to play at Calvary Christian in Columbus on Friday.
The Warriors defeated Calvary on Nov. 28 61-54, while the girls came away with a 44-35 win.
