From staff reports
Callaway’s football team made some more history Friday night at Macon County.
The Cavaliers had never defeated the Bulldogs in Montezuma, but they rolled to a 50-7 win to capture their 13th straight Region 5-AA victory.
It was a good win for head coach Pete Wiggins, who guided the Cavaliers (3-2, 3-0 in Region 5-AA) to their first region championship and playoff win in 2008.
“The players were chanting ‘Making history’ on the bus ride home,” Wiggins said. “They’re excited.”
Callaway saw a spectacular performance from senior Quantavius Leslie, who had three total touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams.
Leslie returned an interception for a touchdown, caught a score from quarterback Quan Bray and returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
Bray added two rushing scores to go along with his pass to Leslie, while fullback Randy Bailey and running back Marquis Terrell added one each.
Defensive lineman Golden Sutton also scooped a Macon County fumble and returned it for a touchdown.
Callaway led 38-0 at the half.
Wiggins was proud of his team and the coaching staff for putting together another solid performance. The Cavaliers have won three straight after starting the season 0-2.
“Everyone played extremely well tonight,” Wiggins said. “The defense especially played well.”
Callaway will host Jordan High Thursday night at Callaway Stadium.
LAFAYETTE CHRISTIAN: The Cougars lost a 30-27 heartbreaker to Faith Christian Academy Friday night in Loganville.
The Cougars (3-3 overall), trailing by three with less than two minutes remaining, drove to the Faith 1-yard line where quarterback Brian Anderson dove up the middle for what seemed like the go-ahead winning touchdown.
The play was negated by an aiding the runner penalty, however, which put the Cougars back at the 14-yard line.
The game ended as time expired with Lafayette at the 4-yard line.
“(The penalty) was a shame,” said head coach Nick Nehring. “We made our mistakes - we had turnovers and penalties - -but it was too bad we had to lose like that.”
Anderson had two rushing touchdowns, while Jarred Pike and Nathan Chola each ran for one score.
Lafayette rallied to get in position to win. The Cougars trailed the entire game, and was down 22-14 at halftime.
The game was a battle for second place in the ICSGA South region.
“We just couldn’t get it in at the end,” Nehring said. “We have to go back to work.”
