HOGANSVILLE - It just wasn’t their night.

The Callaway Cavaliers struggled from the opening tip against the Patriots and lost 103-83 in a non-region game at Hogansville Elementary School.

Callaway won its first game 55-49 against the Patriots on Dec. 14.

Meanwhile, the Lady Cavaliers won 69-57 to sweep the season series after also beating Greenville 73-49 in December.

The Cavaliers were coming off a huge region win over Douglass on Friday that put them in first place, but they couldn’t recapture that same magic on Saturday.

Callaway made things easier for Greenville, mishandling the ball numerous times and committing turnovers galore.

Callaway head coach Terry Hayes didn’t mince words afterward about his team’s performance.

“We got our behind handed to us tonight in the wood shed,” Hayes remarked. “I give Greenville credit, Greenville played with all the energy, a lot of want to and effort. They beat us. We had no defensive effort. We played like we’d never seen a basketball before.”

Greenville had its way with Callaway early and often as the Patriots led 24-7 at the end of the first quarter.

They extended that lead to 60-37 at the half and 83-55 after three quarters.

Greenville was stuck on 99 points for nearly four minutes in the fourth quarter before Callaway fouled and the Patriots hit the century mark.

Although the Cavaliers lost by 20, they were down by as many as 34 in the second half.

“The effort was not there tonight,” Hayes added.

Greenville had five players in double figures for the game while Callaway was led in scoring by freshman Dre Martin, who came off the bench to score 21 points. He was followed Nehemiah Jones who scored 18 and Daniel Heard with 11.

While the Cavaliers fell to 10-7 overall, they remained 9-1 in Region 4-AAA.

In the girls’ game, the Lady Cavaliers played a close game against the Lady Patriots, who led 15-14 after the first quarter. Callaway jumped ahead by the half at 30-27 and maintained that three-point lead after three quarters, 46-43.

The game was highlighted by the play of freshmen Tanesha Johnson and Kamaria Porter.

Johnson led the scoring for Callaway with 26 points while hitting eight-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter to keep the Lady Cavs ahead.

Johnson also nailed a pair of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter.

Porter had 16 points followed by Monica Jackson’s 13 points.

The team shot 20-of-34 in the game from the free-throw line, including 11-of-18 in the fourth quarter.

Coach Deyano Martin praised his freshmen players for stepping up, which he says is always a bonus to add to the experienced of the older team members.

“That’s always good for the freshmen,” Martin said of Johnson and Porter. “Tanesha has been playing really well all year, but if I can get Porter to play that well every night, that will help us a lot. I’m proud of all of them. The free throws down the stretch kept us in the game and kept us ahead and we were able to pull it out.”

Martin complimented Greenville’s effort and said he knew the Lady Patriots’ coaches had been working hard to prepare for the game.

“I’ve got to tip my hat to Greenville,” Martin commented. “They did a wonderful job of preparing themselves for the press. I think they did a good job of taking care of the ball. I think the coach (Waqueisha Tenney) had been working hard. I knew it was going to be tough game. I knew they weren’t going to lay down.”

Callaway opened the second half with a full-court, man-to-man press that yielded immediate results, stretching its lead by six points, but the Lady Patriots rallied back to go up by a point before Callaway fought back and regained the lead off a 3-pointer by Porter.

The third quarter was mostly a back-and-forth game before Callaway continued its full-court pressure starting in the fourth quarter that netted five points, including one of two 3-pointers by Johnson and an eight-point lead.

The Lady Cavs slowly pulled away from Greenville in the fourth, leading by as many as 11 as Greenville continued to foul Johnson, and the point guard sank eight consecutive free throws at one point.

“We showed poise unlike (Friday in a loss to Douglass). We came back tonight,” Martin said. “We played with a little bit more intensity and we played smart and as a result, we were able to pull it out.”

The Lady Cavaliers are 11-6 overall, and they’re 6-4 in the region.

Callaway’s teams will be on the road against Jackson-Atlanta on Tuesday.
