The Greenville Patriots and Callaway Cavaliers put on a show Friday night at Hendrix Stadium in Hogansville.

The teams combined for seven touchdowns and 46 first-half points before the game was turned over to the reserves in the second half.

Greenville scored a touchdown in the final minute of the first half to build a 26-20 lead.

“It was a great atmosphere, and it was a good physical game,” Callaway coach Pete Wiggins said. “Greenville’s got a great football team. Coach (Jeremy) Williams does a great job with that group. It was a tough, hard-fought ballgame.”

Callaway’s offense figures to be electrifying this season, and it was Friday night.

In the first quarter, running back Marquis Terrell scored on a touchdown of nearly 40 yards to tie it a 6-6.

After Greenville built a 19-6 lead thanks to three long touchdown runs, the Cavs fought back to go ahead 20-19.

Late in the first quarter, fullback Randy Bailey scored on a 2-yard scoring run.

In the second quarter, senior wide receiver Quantavius Leslie did his thing.

Leslie out-leaped his defender around the 25-yard line to make a catch from quarterback Chris Laye, and he sprinted the rest of the way for the score.

Colby Dremann converted his second extra point with 8:45 left in the half, and Callaway was up by one.

Greenville responded late in the half, though, with Kentavious Caldwell going high in the end zone for a touchdown catch with 16 seconds left.

In the final two quarters, Wiggins was glad to see his younger players get a chance to play.

“Our young guys got a lot of reps,” Wiggins said. “I feel like we came away getting better.”
