The Troup County Commission has awarded a contract of $2.1 million to Langford Construction Co. in LaGrange for the second phase of renovations at Callaway Stadium.

The project includes a new concession stand and restrooms; a new locker room, training room and officials’ suite on the visiting team’s side; converting the home side’s two locker rooms into one large locker room; and refurbishment of the stadium’s facade.

Langford is scheduled to begin work in January and be finished by the time football season starts again in the fall.

The first phase was press box renovations that were completed over the summer for $70,000.

The Callaway Foundation, which built the stadium in 1959, agreed to total financing of the first two phases and 50 percent financing of the third and final phase, estimated at $3 million to $4 million. LaGrange College, the school board and local governments would have to come up with the rest.

The third phase would include 1,200 new seats and a new two-story press box on the visitors side with an observation level for filming and entertaining VIPs. Aisles would be widened and handrails added, and accommodations for the handicapped would be upgraded.

The two entrance ways would be enclosed, wrought iron fencing added along Dallis Street and other new fencing around the stadium. Two restrooms would be added at the south end zone.

The home and visitors sides would be reversed so the home side gets the better press box and locker rooms, and more parking space.

County recreation director Tod Tentler said the project is under budget and a few of the enhancements that were planned for phase three may be accomplished in phase two.

In other business Tuesday, the commission approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance related to wireless communications. The ordinance includes a requirement that cell phone companies pay $5,000 into an escrow account for a cell phone tower and $2,500 for a co-location on an existing tower. The money will be used for a consultant to review the application.

Also Tuesday, the commission honored Isabelle Turner Knight for creating the “Troup County in World War II” exhibit that was displayed at both the LaGrange Symphony Guild and the Legacy Museum on Main. The exhibit includes photos and news articles about the role of local soldiers during the war.

The commission appointed or reappointed:

— Charles Knight and Tommy Baker (alternate) to two-year terms on the Appeals Board/Subdivisions and Road Specifications;

— Ann Petry to a six-year term on the Board of Assessors;

— State Rep. Carl Von Epps to a six-year term on the Board of Health;
