The Lafayette Christian School Cougars are heading to state.

Facing Heirway Christian in the opening round of the GISA Region 4-A tournament on Tuesday in Carrollton, the Cougars rolled to a 51-26 victory to advance to the semifinals on Thursday against top-seeded Oak Mountain.

With Tuesday’s win, the Cougars secured one of the region’s four invitations to the state tournament.

Now the Cougars will try to pull off the upset win over the host team on Thursday.

“Hopefully we’ll give them a game Thursday night,” Lafayette Christian head coach Rene Gomez said. “We’ll have to make sure we execute and do everything right. We’ll see what happens. We’ll load up and play the game.”

In Tuesday’s game, the Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead, and they followed that up a short time later with an 8-0 run to go up 15-4.

The Cougars were up 30-13 at the half, and they pulled away in the second half to beat Heirway for the third time this season.

Colton Whitley, who Gomez said “was a workhorse for us inside,” led the Cougars with 14 points.

Blake Spradlin added nine points, and Gomez said “he set the one early driving to the basket.”

Caleb Corbin added six points, and Levi Evans added five points and did a nice job running the offense from his guard position according to Gomez.

David Curry contributed five assists.
