For the first time this season, the Lafayette Christian School Cougars will have to bounce back from a loss.

After opening with four straight wins, the Cougars were beaten by Evangel Christian in an eight-man football game last week.

The Cougars will look to get back on the winning track when they host CrossePointe Christian Academy on Friday in their homecoming game.

Lafayette Christian head coach Nick Nehring said the competition won’t get any easier when CrossPointe comes to town.

“They’ve got a good team,” Nehring said. “It’s a big, big game.”

Lafayette Christian was shut out in the first half against Evangel last week, but the effort was much better in the second half of the game after being down 20 points at the half.

The Cougars came up with two touchdowns and were on the march for a third score before an interception was returned for a touchdown.

“We played probably one of the best halves of football we’ve played all year,” Nehring said. “We shut them out. We didn’t give up any points defensively in the second half of that game. So basically we won the second half.”

Nehring said one of the big challenges this week will be dealing with CrossPointe’s prolific passing game.

“They like to throw the ball,” Nehring said. “They’ve got a lot of good athletes, they’re fast, they’re well-coached. We’re going to have our work cut out for us on defense. The offense is going to have to move the ball. It’s going to be interesting.”

As for the Cougars, despite last week’s loss, the news is good across the board.

The team is playing well, the record is excellent, and everyone is still on the field.

“We’re healthy,” Nehring said. “At this point in the season, we haven’t lost anybody. It’s just bumps and bruises.”

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Whitesville Road stadium, and the homecoming queen will be crowned at the half.
