Three men were arrested on Thursday morning for trafficking in marijuana, after 100 pounds of marijuana was found on a wrecker.
According to reports, the arrests were made after federal investigators conducted a search warrant on a suspicious package that was being shipped from El Paso, Texas to a location in Troup County.
Drug agents with the Troup County Sheriffs’s Office were notified and awaited for the package to be dropped off at a warehouse in LaGrange for the involved party to pick up. During surveillance the warehouse, Travis Eugene Thomas, 34, of Columbus, arrived at the location and loaded the large wooden shipping crate onto a 1998 International wrecker. Agents followed the wrecker to a nearby convenience store where Thomas met with Ramon Damian Alire, 20, and Martin Escobedo Jr., 18, both of New Mexico, who were waiting in a blue Mercedes Benz.
After the three spoke briefly at the store, they left the location with the Mercedes following behind the wrecker. Agents followed the the vehicles and conducted traffic stops on them near the intersection of Whitesville Road and highway 18. All three men were arrested without incident.
The wooden shipping crate that was carried by the wrecker contained 18 bundles of Marijuana weighing approximately 100 pounds; agents also went to Thomas’ place of business in Columbus and found about two more pounds of marijuana and materials commonly used to package illegal narcotics.
It is undetermined where the package was being transported to and the case is still under investigation.
They were all charged with trafficking marijuana and are being held at the Troup County Sheriff’s Office without bond.
