After two years of planning and three months of construction, the Hogansville Police Department has completed their new firearms training complex located on city property behind the police department.
Before its completion, the department had been sending its officers to the the LaGrange Police Department and even as far Harris County to complete state mandated firearms training twice a year.
“We did it to be more cost affective,” said Hogansville Police Chief Moses Ector. “We were having to spend money on mileage and overtime because they were having to work over due to travel.”
Ector said that now that they have their own training facility, it will give officers the opportunity to train more during their duty day to improve and sharpen their skills.
While the range is now available for training, there are plans for implementing an electronic targetry system with moving targets along with other additions that will allow updated and state-of-the-art firearms training. The police department has also implemented the use of ammunition that is made with lead-free compressed copper components to create an environmentally friendly complex.
The range is designed to train four people at a time, but Ector generally prefers for two people to train at a time.
“We purposefully made the range small so we can better watch techniques and closely train,” Ector said.
The HPD will conduct civilian firearm training at 3 p.m. on Jan. 5 at the complex.
