Hogansville City Council voted unanimously Monday to put the brakes on a day spa that recently made news for employing illegal immigrants and allegedly offering illegal sex acts to customers.
Council revoked the business license of the 70 Sauna at 1869 E. Main St. The business was one of two investigated by the Troup County Sheriff’s Department on Oct. 21. An undercover Newnan police officer went in to the business to get a massage, and a female employee told him she would accept money for masturbation.
The woman was charged with a misdemeanor. Investigators said two of the women working in the business were illegal immigrants and would be picked up by federal authorities. Another woman was given a warning for giving massages without a license.
It’s unclear if the business has continued to operate since the charges. No one from 70 Spa showed up at Monday night’s revocation hearing.
City Manager Bill Stankiewicz said the sheriff’s investigation and resulting charges pointed out several violations to the business license the city had issued, including failure to get licensed by the state for massage therapy and employing more than two people.
“It’s obvious it’s not operating as a day spa,” Stankiewicz said.
In other matters Monday, council set 7 p.m. Nov. 16 as a hearing date for businesses who want to comment on a proposed grease trap ordinance for restaurants in the city.
Restaurants are required to have a grease trap installed on their sewer line to keep grease from entering the city’s sewer system. Hogansville had been depending on the county Health De-partment to routinely check for the traps, but Stankiewicz said an ordinance would give the city more power to crack down on violators.
City attorney Jeff Todd, who also represents LaGrange, said LaGrange adopted a similar ordinance about a year ago.
