It’s time for Hogansville’s annual Hummingbird Festival and this year’s event literally has something for everyone, between the addition of a Texas Hold’em poker tournament and Miss Hummingbird Festival pageant.

Events officially start Saturday with the poker tournament and conclude Nov. 3 with the pageant.

The festival dinner is Oct. 18 at Victoria Belle Special Event Center.

Most of the events, however, take place on Oct. 20 and 21 throughout downtown Hogansville. The pancake breakfast at Hogansville United Methodist Church is from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Oct. 20 at the church and the alumni football game and Hall of Fame ceremony is Oct. 20.

Four athletes and one media representative are being inducted into the Hall of Fame this year:

• Lewis “Bubba” Booker, football;

• Tammy Cameron, girls’ basketball;

• Bill Lowe, media;

• Laverne Philpot, girls’ basketball; and

• Charlie Smith, football.

The ceremony will be immediately after the football game at Hendrix Field. The annual alumni football game is at 7 p.m.

Sign-up for the poker tournament begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday and the first deal is at noon. The first-place winner will receive $500 in cash, second wins $300 and third place wins $200. The tournament is at Hawg Heaven at 218 U.S. 29 North.

Food and craft vendors are sold out for both days of the main festival, on Oct. 20 and 21. Entertainment is scheduled all day both days at the Food Court Stage, 1910 House Stage and Fire House Stage, all downtown.

The festival serves as a fundraiser for the Hogansville Charitable Trust, which helps fund improvement projects throughout the city. In its 14 years, the festival has raised about $240,000 for these projects, resulting in $2.5 million in improvements to the city.

The money funded the renovation of the former Royal Theater, now City Hall and three phases of sidewalk improvements, along with development of the “Tower Trail,” from the amphitheater west to Oak Street. The festival also has given money to local charities in recent years, and earlier this spring gave money so that Hogansville’s GED program could stay in town.
