LaGrange City Council approved an ordinance Tuesday allowing residents to travel through a few downtown spots unhindered by traffic signals.

But in council’s decision, safety came first.

Council approved changing intersections at Haralson and Church streets, Haralson and Ridley Avenue, and Broome and Bull streets into two-way stops.

The intersection at Main and Broome streets will continue to be regulated by a traffic signal because of high pedestrian traffic due to the Carmike LaGrange 10 movie theater.

Travelers on Haralson Street at Church Street and Ridley Avenue and Broome Street at Bull Street will no longer have to wait an extended period of time to turn. Travelers on Bull, Ridley and Church won’t have to wait at all.

“I gladly second that motion,” Councilman Willie Edmondson said.

Edmondson spoke of a wreck where a Honda Civic turned into the path of a Ford Explorer a few hours before the meeting, about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of Broome and Main streets.

The Civic was making a left turn from Broome to Main, when the Explorer came over the hill and struck it in the left fender.

Edmondson said the wreck was one reason they voted to leave the traffic light in action.

In other matters Tuesday, council approved:

— Amending the adult entertainment establishment ordinance to prohibit any sexually oriented business from being created within the P-1 parkway overlay zones, stretching from downtown LaGrange down Lafayette Parkway to Interstate 85 and Morgan Street connecting to New Franklin Road down to Wal-Mart.

— A resolution authorizing the city to accept a utility agreement with the Georgia Department of Transportation for the South Loop road project. LaGrange will re-ceive about $890,000 through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to relocate utilities associated with the project. The city will be responsible for paying 2.5 percent of the funds.

— An on-premise consumption beer and wine license for Seoul Garden restaurant at 1841 Roanoke Road. The restaurant will be at the site that most recently was Korean barbecue restaurant Asian Garden. It previously housed Loco’s Deli and Pub.
