After surviving a pair of one-run games last week, the Lady Grangers had a little more breathing room Wednesday afternoon against Shaw.
Behind a dominant effort by pitcher Emily Anderson, LaGrange captured a 4-0 victory in Columbus.
LaGrange (10-3 overall) improved to 5-0 in Region 5-AAAA, and they’re at the halfway point of their region schedule.
LaGrange will participate in a tournament in Columbus this weekend before taking on region foes Troup and Columbus next week.
“We have a big weekend coming up, and then next week we have three games,” LaGrange head coach Jan Jones said. “We’ll get a lot of people some playing time (in the tournament) and get ready for the second round of region.”
In Wednesday’s game, Anderson shut Shaw down, reaching double figures in strikeouts while surrendering just one hit.
Shelby O’Neal had a pair of hits, including a double, to go along with her two RBIs, and Karsin Spinks also had a big day at the plate.
CALLAWAY: The Lady Cavaliers had some defensive miscues that proved costly in Wednesday’s 6-1 road loss to Rockmart.
Callaway committed four errors that led to four unearned runs.
“I gave them Friday through Monday off, and we shouldn’t have done that,” Callaway coach Nick Drescher said. “You could tell it hurt them.”
Still, the game was much more competitive than the first meeting this season, a 13-0 Rockmart win.
“It was a lot better from when we played them early in the year,” Drescher said. “A year or two ago, we would have (been happy with) playing them well. But we’ve got higher expectations for them. We can play a lot better than we showed.”
Callaway (8-8 overall) fell to 1-2 in the region with losses to Rockmart and Central-Carroll.
“We can beat both of them,” Drescher said. “We’ll get a shot at both of them again.”
In Wednesday’s game, Callaway scored its lone run in the fourth inning.
Jessica Siggers reached on a single, stole second, and scored on an RBI hit from Keshonna Terrell.
Freshman Brittany Mitchell got the start on the mound and went the distance, giving up seven hits and two earned runs.
Callaway will be back on the road today to take on Jackson High in Atlanta.
