The LaGrange High softball team has found itself on a bit of a skid in recent days.

After winning four straight games to improve its record to 10-3, the Lady Grangers (11-8) have dropped five of their past six games, including four of five in a tournament over the weekend.

On Monday, LaGrange continued to struggle with a 6-3 loss to visiting Newnan.

“We’ve just got to get out of that one inning,” head coach Jan Jones said after the game.

Jones said the team has usually had one bad inning during the 1-5 stretch that it has been unable to overcome.

Against Newnan, that inning came in the sixth when Newnan scored three runs.

“We’ve got to learn to pick up from it and move past and not go backwards so much and continue to move forward,” Jones said.

LaGrange struck first against Newnan.

In the bottom of the first, Karsin Spinks beat out an infield hit, and she later scored on a Shelby O’Neal double.

Newnan tied it in the third, and it remained a 1-1 game until the sixth when the Lady Cougars tallied three runs to go up 4-1.

In the seventh, Newnan tacked on two more runs to go ahead 6-1.

LaGrange made some noise in its half of the seventh.

Mary Margaret Rogers led off with a walk, and MaKenzie Traylor cranked a towering home run over the centerfield fence to close the cap to 6-3.

“MaKenzie can hit and I’m glad for her” Jones said. “She’s been struggling. A lot of it’s mental. She’s just thinking too much. She needed that. It was a good thing.”

Traylor was all smiles when asked about the home run, her second of the season.

“I didn’t think it was out at first, then once I got to first (base), I knew it was over (the fence),” she said.

LaGrange continued to threaten after Traylor’s heroics.

Emily Anderson laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first base, and Lauren Robinson walked to put runners on first and second with still no outs.

Freshman Leighton Parker then lined a shot into left field to load the bases, and the tying run was on first.

The rally stalled from there, though, with Newnan getting out of the jam without any more runs scoring.

“We’ve still got a long way to go for all of us,” Jones commented. “We’ll take it game-by-game and practice-by-practice.”

LaGrange hosts cross-town rival Troup at 5 p.m. today.
