LaGrange attorney James G. Baker has been named to GeorgiaTrend magazine’s “40 under 40” list.

Each year, the magazine honors 40 young people from throughout the state who have made significant contributions to their professions and communities.

“We try to get a good variety from business, government, education, the arts” and other fields, said GeorgiaTrend Editor Susan Percy.

Baker, 37, is municipal court judge in LaGrange and Hogansville, an assistant Troup County magistrate and a federal bankruptcy trustee. He also handles estates in Troup and Heard counties for people who die without wills or whose wills are contested.

“I don’t like to portray myself as a workaholic, but it’s probably accurate,” Baker told the magazine.

His wife, Troup County Solicitor Markette Baker, previously made the “40 under 40” list, but it’s not the first time for a husband and wife, Percy said.

Baker and the others will be honored at a private reception Oct. 21 in Atlanta.

Other previous local honorees have included Hutchinson Traylor insurance executive Edward Smith, former LaGrange College President Stuart Gulley and West Georgia Health System Vice President Liza Fritchley.

“We take nominations from readers and the actual selections are made by the editorial staff,” Percy said. “… It gives us a chance to highlight people who are doing some important work, but maybe haven’t been in the limelight yet.”

— “40 under 40” is the cover story in GeorgiaTrend’s October issue, which came out Thursday. It’s also available online at georgiatrend.com.
