Man arrested after two-state chase

A LaGrange man was n jail today after officers said he fled from police and sheriff’s deputies in a chase in Troup County.

Otis Cameron, 46, whose address were unavailable, was stopped in Alabama by Chambers County sheriff’s deputies after LaGrange and Troup County officers broke off a chase Tuesday afternoon.

Lawmen gave this ac-count:

An officer attempted to stop Cameron, who was accused of driving on a suspended license, in the parking lot of Bay Food Store at 1312 Hamilton Road before he accelerated his Honda Accord onto Hamilton Road. The car continued southbound on Hamilton Road, then made a U-turn at an intersection and headed northbound. He then turned onto Butler, Bagley and Cedar streets while disregarding a stop sign. From Cedar Street, Cameron turned onto Whitesville and Handley streets while barely avoiding a collision with another vehicle. Traveling at 60 mph, he turned onto Dunson Street and sped through an intersection past a stop sign. He later turned onto Fourth Avenue and then Troup Street while traveling 75 mph before turning onto Monroe Street, where he approached a dead end. Cameron then pulled his vehicle off the roadway and drove under a power line and eventually reached North Kight Drive. At that time, police called off the chase and called other law enforcement agencies to warn them. Another police officer later spotted the vehicle speeding down Roanoke Road, where a Troup County sheriff’s patrol car got behind his vehicle and chased him to the state line. Within 10 minutes, Chambers County sheriff’s deputies stopped the vehicle and arrested Cameron.

Cameron was being held in the Chambers County jail and has a warrants issued by police for driving on a suspended license, reckless driving and felony eluding police.

Burglaries, thefts

— A resident of the 200 block of Melrose Drive said a thief damaged the front door of his residence and stole a $1,200 laptop, a $400 TV and a $500 flat-screen TV.

— A thief stole a $1,500 Pomeranian from the front yard of a residence in the 100 block of Hamilton Road.

- A thief stole a two TVs valued at $200, a $200 stereo system and $100 of food from a residence in the 300 block of Greenville Street.

Accident

A LaGrange man was listed in unsatisfactory condition at Columbus Medical Center for injuries suffered in an accident this week. Davis Prophett, 90, of Cooley Road was involved in a two-vehicle accident near the intersection of South Davis and Cooley roads Monday afternoon. Prophett was eastbound on Cooley Road and failed to yield at a stop sign before striking the front of another vehicle travelling north on Davis Road, state troopers said. Prophett’s vehicle spun counterclockwise and traveled 83 feet off the side of the road into a ditch. Prophett’s condition has remained the same since Monday, the hospital said. He was cited for failure to yield.

Guilty pleas

Sentenced after pleading guilty Wednesday in Troup Superior Court were:

— Mitchell Todd Milner Jr., 25, of LaGrange; five years in prison and seven years’ probation for possession of methamphetamine and obstruction of an officer.

— Jody Wilson, 41, of LaGrange; five years in prison and five years’ probation for possession of methamphetamine and violation of the open container law.

— Ted Demario Green, 20, of LaGrange; four years in prison and six years’ probation for possession with intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana.

— Velma Lee Jackson, 57, of West Point; three years in prison for shoplifting, interference with government property and escape.

— Harold Rudy Hembree, 37, of LaGrange; two years at the County Correctional Institute, three years’ probation and a $500 fine for DUI, fleeing officers and driving while license suspended.

— Derantis Rachard Godfrey, 27, of LaGrange; two years in prison and three years’ probation for aggravated assault. Police said he struck a woman in the head with a brick on Oct. 13 at Ridge and Alford streets.

— Alvin Gates, 42, of Hogansville; two year in prison for stealing a ring.
