The two Lafayette Christian School basketball players showed off their talent and versatility during Tuesday’s 52-40 home victory over Skipstone.
Douglas had 21 points, a school-record 12 steals and seven assists.
Lowery led the way in scoring with 22 points, and she added six steals and seven rebounds.
Those performances helped the Lady Cougars improve to 5-7 overall, and they remained 1-3 in GISA Region 4-A play heading into today’s showdown against region rival Dawson Street Christian School.
“We needed a game like this before (playing Dawson Street),” Lafayette Christian head coach Paula Johnson said. The Lady Cougars are looking to reverse the outcome of the previous meeting when Tiana Gray scored 52 points to lead Dawson Street to a 69-68 victory.
“We can’t give up another 52 points,” Johnson said.
In Thursday’s game, it was a nine-point game in the fourth period when Lowery scored back-to-back baskets to put the Lady Cougars on top 44-31.
Mary Mae Cole then scored off an offensive rebound to make it a 15-point game, and Douglas made two free throws with 3:26 remaining to push the lead to 48-31.
“They are getting better and better,” Johnson said of her team. “They’re playing good team ball.”
In Thursday’s boys’ game, Lafayette Christian only managed two points in the opening quarter on the way to a 62-35 loss to Skipstone.
The Cougars’ only points in the first period came on a pair of free throws.
“We get good looks. The offense is designed to get you a shot,” Lafayette Christian head coach Rene Gomez said. “And then you have to put the ball in the hole. That’s the thing. That’s what’s hurting us right now. We don’t have guys who can score. And you have to be able to do that.”
Gomez said some of the players need to be more aggressive.
“We have some guys too that are very passive,” Gomez said. “They don’t look to attack. They’re just not aggressive.” We start thinking about the possibilities of failure instead of the possibilities of success.”
David Curry paced the Cougars with 11 points, and Levi Evans added eight points.
The Cougars have only won one game this season, and today they’re taking on the defending GISA Class A state-champion Dawson Street Christian School Wildcats.
“We have to continue to work hard,” Gomez said. “I told the guys, we’re not going to get three or four players that are going to appear to help us. It’s us.”
As for today’s game, Gomez is hoping his team can make things more competitive than the first meeting, an 81-34 Dawson Street victory.
“We’ll look for a better showing than we had last time,“ Gomez said. “And hopefully the things we talked about in this game we’ll get better at.”
