Qualifying gets under way Monday for the Nov. 3 city elections in LaGrange, Hogansville and West Point, as well as a special election on the same date for the District 129 seat in the state House of Representatives.
Qualifying for city races will be Monday through Friday. LaGrange candidates will qualify in the Troup County Probate Office, and those in Hogansville and West Point will go to their respective city halls.
Up for election in LaGrange are the mayor’s post, currently held by Jeff Lukken, and district council posts held by Tom Gore, Norma Tucker and Nick Woodson.
Gore has said he will not run for a third four-year term, and attorney Jim Thornton of LaGrange has announced plans to qualify for that seat.
Hogansville’s election will include the mayor’s post, currently held by Jimmy Jackson, and the at-large council posts held by Bobby Joe Frazier and Charlie Frank Martin.
In West Point, the ballot will have the at-large council seats currently held by Judy Wilkinson, Joseph R. Downs III and Darren Kelley.
The District 129 House seat became vacant when Vance Smith of Pine Mountain resigned to become commissioner of the state Department of Transportation. Candidates for that seat will qualify Monday through Wednesday at the state Elections Division in Atlanta. The first day’s times are 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., then 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and finally 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday.
The district encompasses southern Troup County, including West Point, most of Harris County and small portion of Muscogee County.
New voters have to register by Oct. 5 to participate in the Nov. 3 elections.
