Mr. Richard W. “Dick” Hood, III, died Saturday, September 15, 2012, at Columbus Specialty Hospital.

Mr. Hood was born Saturday, April 27, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late Lorraine Cecile Longpre and Richard William Hood, Jr. He retired from the U. S. Navy after twenty years, having served in Guantanamo Bay during the Cuban Missile Crisis and two tours in Vietnam. After service to his country, Mr. Hood worked for the United States Postal Service in Lanett, Alabama for 23 years. Mr. Hood was devoted to his family especially the activities and endeavors of his children and grandchildren. He was a lifelong Auburn University fan and a member of Ayres Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mr. Hood was preceded in death by his son Billy Hood and is survived by his wife of 47 years, Becky Hood of LaGrange; his daughter and her husband, Angie and Robert Sams of LaGrange; his grandchildren, Nikki Sams of Auburn, Alabama, Zach Hood of Newnan, Georgia, and Spencer Sams of LaGrange; his sisters and brother-in-law, Margaret Brewes of Mesa, Arizona, Elizabeth and her husband, Hubert Ruessman of Starling Height, Michigan and Carolyn Hood of LaGrange; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert Hood of Hawthorne, Florida, Edwin and his wife Sandra Hood of Pine Mountain, Georgia, and William and his wife Jenn Hood of Parker, Colorado; his brother-in-law Buddy Lane of LaGrange; his cousins Mary and Billy Lane of West Point; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mr. Dick Hood will be held Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at 11:00 AM EDT from the graveside in Marseilles Cemetery, West Point. Officiating will Pastor Wayne Hester and Reverend Jerry Ledbetter.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association or Ayres Memorial United Methodist Church.
