Early voting may have started Monday, but fourth- and fifth-graders at LaGrange Academy already have chosen the next president.
The students had the mock election when Troup County Probate Judge Donald Boyd brought two electronic voting machines set up to allow the students to “vote” on the same machines that are used in Troup County. An older style ballot box was also made available for the students to see how paper voting was conducted in the past.
Voter turnout was a very admirable 87 percent, school officials said. Of the 211 registered voters at the Academy, 183 voted. In “local” election results, the favorite meal winner was pizza, chocolate ice cream and Coke. This ticket defeated chicken fingers, cookie dough ice cream and lemonade.
For U.S. Representative, the students sent Lynn Westmoreland, R-Grantville, back to Washington for another term. He captured 94 votes.
In the Presidential race, the students selected Mitt Romney with 107 of the votes cast. President Obama received 47 votes while the Libertarian Party nominee, Gary Johnson, received 13 votes.
While not technically eligible to hold office due to age restrictions, several current LaGrange Academy students did pick up a few write-in votes.
