Parent Portal continues to grow for Troup County schools, receiving about 10,000 log-ins among parents and students since its rollout for middle and high school students.

Chief financial officer Don Miller said at Monday’s school board caucus meeting that about 752 parent accounts have been utilized since the program replaced the previously used Edline in October.

“Those parents have logged in about 3,500 times,” he said.

Parent Portal is new online access system that allows parents to keep track of their students’ progress via the Internet.

Those 752 parent accounts amount to about 1,200 students. Nearly 650 student accounts have also been activated, logging about 1,300 hits per week or 5,400 since rollout.

School officials continue to work the kinks out of the system, linking family members with their children and activating accounts.

“It continues to progress,” Miller said.

Parent Portal is currently available for about 6,000 students. Officials plan on the program going live for elementary students early next year.

“We didn’t want to bite off the 13,000 all at once,” he said.

Also announced Monday, Troup High School students will see a change in administration beginning in February as assistant principal Ricky Nolen announced his retirement, effective Feb. 1.

Nolen has been with Troup County schools for 12 years and has been an educator for 37.

The board is expected to approve Thursday:

— A purchase order of $59,890 to School Improvement Network of Midvale, Utah, for use of the PD° professional learning tool. The system will allow teachers to complete professional learning workshops and activities through the internet, allowing for more time in the classroom and reducing costs associated with traveling to workshops.

— An order for $37,051 to West Georgia RESA in Grantville for continued use of the Youth Apprenticeship Program. Currently, Troup County has 29 students enrolled in the program working for 23 employers and 18 internship students working for 16 employers.

Funds will be paid through the state’s Youth Apprenticeship Grant.
