The Troup Lady Tigers are still looking for that first win.

They hoped to pick up victory number one Saturday night against Columbus, but they were unable to overcome a slow start.

After falling 21-9 at the half, the Lady Tigers picked up the pace in the final two quarters, but they still ended up on the wrong end of a 48-39 score.

“I was real disappointed in how we came out,” Troup head coach Carla Thornton said. “We played well (against Carrollton Friday night). I was hoping we would feed off that and let that be our foundation. But we came out sluggish.”

At the half, Thornton threatened the players with a Sunday practice if they didn’t pick up the pace, and Troup did play significantly better - especially on the offensive end - in the second half.

Troup scored 30 points in the second half, a 21-point improvement over the first half.

Deaushanique “DeeDee” Sanders led Troup with 14 points, and Sydni Jackson scored 10 points, all in the fourth period.

Although Troup is still searching for its first win, Thornton believes the team is improving, thanks in part to some younger players starting to get a better handle on the rigors of varsity basketball.

“We’re starting to have people step up in places they haven’t stepped up before,” Thornton said. “We’re starting to see some girls who are going to be able to help us more and more.”

Troup will visit region foe Fayette County Tuesday night.
