The Tigers (9-9 overall, 4-6 in region play) found themselves in a 14-2 hole midway through the first quarter, although they did get within six on a Demetrius Trammell 3-pointer with 2:25 left in the opening period.
Fayette County closed the quarter on a 7-0 run and began the second period with six more points, though, to take a 27-8 lead with 5:20 left in the half.
Troup got within 15 on a Lakeithin Buckner 3-pointer with one minute left in the half, but Fayette County took a 35-18 lead into the locker room.
In the third quarter, the Tigers found themselves down by as many as 19 points, but they did get within 13 at the 3:15 mark on a Trammell 3-pointer.
Once again Fayette County closed a quarter on a strong note, though, and a 7-0 run put the home team in a 54-34 hole.
Troup used an 8-0 run to get within 10 of Fayette County with 40 seconds left, but it was too little too late.
Trammell led the Tigers with 13 points, and Buckner added 11 points.
In Saturday’s girls’ game, Fayette County dominated from the opening tip to the last en route to a 63-14 victory.
The Lady Tigers had just seven points through three periods before scoring seven in the final quarter.
It’s been a tough season for the Lady Tigers, whose only victory came against a winless Shaw team.
Still, Troup head coach Carla Thornton said the players are still giving it their all.
“I’m real proud of them. They show up every day, and they keep playing no matter what the score looks like,” Thornton said.
Troup’s teams will visit LaGrange High on Tuesday.
