Four candidates, all Republicans, have qualified for the District 129 seat in the Georgia House of Representatives.

The winner of the Nov. 3 special election will fill the remaining year in the term of Republican Vance Smith Jr. of Pine Mountain, who gave up the seat to become commissioner of the state Department of Transportation. A runoff, if necessary, would be Dec. 1.

Smith’s son, Kip Smith, 27, of Columbus paid his $400 qualifying fee Tuesday, as did Steve Earls, 56, of Pine Mountain and Jerry Luquire, 71, of Columbus.

Earl T. Davis, 75, of Hamilton signed up for the race Monday.

Qualifying ends at noon today in the elections division of the secretary of state’s office in Atlanta. District 129 encompasses southern Troup County, including West Point, most of Harris County and a small part of Muscogee County.

Meanwhile, candidates are qualifying for municipal races in LaGrange, Hogansville and West Point. Qualifying began Monday and ends Friday.

One candidate qualified in West Point on Tuesday. City Councilman Joe Downs III, a doctor, qualified for his seat.

No one qualified in LaGrange or Hogansville on Tuesday.
