The Troup County school system has announced the 2010-11 teacher of the year nominees.

Each school selects representatives who exemplify high standards in teaching and will compete in the system competition. Elementary schools each designate one nominee, and middle and high schools each designate two.

In a program designed to recognize excellence in teaching, the Troup County teacher of the year process aims to spotlight educators who demonstrate outstanding creativity, inspiration and dedication to their jobs.

The nominees are:

Cannon Street Elementary School,Cheryl Stiggers;

Ethel W. Kight Magnet School,Sheila Spinks;

Franklin Forest Elementary School,Peter Doig;

Hillcrest Elementary School,Kimberly Houser;

Hogansville Elementary School,Kristy Johnson;

Hollis Hand Elementary School,Beth Doerr;

Long Cane Elementary School,Cindy Speir;

Mountville Elementary School,Shannon Weems;

Rosemont Elementary School,Amy Vowell;

Unity Elementary School,T.C. Phillips;

West Point Elementary School,Amber Moosman;

Whitesville Road Elementary School, Rebecca Hale;

West Side Magnet School,Lynn Easterwood;

Callaway Middle School,Kimberly Burgess and Terri Herndon;

Gardner Newman Middle School,Leigh Smith and Kathryn Fincher;

Long Cane Middle School,Nigel Walker and Sonya Delaney Brown;

Callaway High School, Arnold Lamb and Julie Dalfrey;

LaGrange High School, Erin Calhoun and Lisa Skinner;

Troup High School, Kelly Giles and LuAnn Jones;

Nominees were asked to complete applications detailing professional preparation and experience as well as answer questions addressing their philosophy of teaching and practical applications. Judges from the school system and the community will evaluate the applications and select three system finalists, one each representing elementary, middle and high schools.

In the final round of judging, education professionals from outside of Troup County will visit finalists at their schools, observe in the classrooms and conduct interviews. The system Teacher of the Year will be named on March 16.

The current system teacher of the year is Whitesville Road Elementary School’s Rochelle Pompey. She serves as the county’s representative in the state teacher of the year competition.
