Now, the two Tigers are taking their act to Kansas.
Tatum and Frazier have both signed letters of intent to play football for Butler Community College in El Dorado, and they’ll join one of the premier junior-college programs in the country.
Tatum and Frazier were part of Troup’s signing-day ceremony Wednesday morning in the school’s media center.
Fellow defensive back Lamonta Truitt is also heading to Kansas, although he’ll be playing for Garden City Community College.
Also, defensive lineman Maurice Swain signed with Indiana, and wide receiver Trevor Spradlin announced his intention to play at LaGrange College.
Tatum said he’s thrilled to get the chance to keep playing with Frazier, and the two will be joining a team that lost in the junior college national-championship game last season.
“He is like a brother to me,” Tatum said. “I committed, and when I heard he was right behind me, I felt better. I wish I could go right now. I’m ready.”
Butler is getting two tremendous play-makers.
Frazier was not only a lock-down corner, but he was also a big-play threat on offense, and he had 505 rushing yards and five touchdown receptions as a senior.
Tatum was also a two-way threat as a senior.
He was the team’s top receiver with 40 receptions for 473 yards with five touchdowns, and he had 85 tackles and three interceptions from his free safety position.
Like Tatum and Frazier, Truitt was also a stellar player on both sides of the ball.
As a defensive back, he had 44 tackles and three interceptions, and he scored seven touchdowns
Troup head coach Lynn Kendall said the two Kansas schools “have a great track record of guys going to the next level.”
Tatum said going to a two-year school will give him a chance to improve his game before making the leap to a four-year school.
“I can develop myself, turn myself into a better football player,” he said.
While Tatum, Frazier and Truitt are heading to the middle of the country to play college football, Spradlin is staying at home.
Spradlin said he’s looking forward to being a part of the LaGrange College spread offense.
“LaGrange runs a spread, and they throw the ball a lot,” Spradlin said. “That was really the deciding factor for me was far as football is concerned.”
Kendall said Wednesday was a big day for all five of the signees, and that each of them realized how quickly four years can go by.
“They’ve done a lot of work in the classroom, and on the field,” Kendall said. “And it goes by fast for them once they get going. When you’re a freshman, it seems like your senior year is forever away. A few minutes later, it’s there.”
