A police review committee to look at use of force in West Point – particularly Tasers – will be voted on Monday.

The city had agreed to create the committee as a condition of allowing officers to use Tasers, which was done earlier this year. Officers have had the training and been carrying the weapons for about three months.

The committee, however, went through several incarnations and at times divided West Point City Council.

The disagreement came to a head in September when council split down the middle on a vote to officially form the group and Mayor Drew Ferguson IV chose not to break the tie.

Councilman Ben Wilcox, one of two council members who has been against the review committee from the beginning, said at council’s Sept. 25 work session he would vote for a formal law enforcement review of all incidents involving use of force if the “citizen” part of the review board was dropped. In the law enforcement review, the city would use an outside agency like the Georgia Sheriff’s Association or Georgia Chiefs of Police to review incidents. The committee will be made up of three people from those groups.

City Manager Ed Moon said the committee would be formed for a year and would review all incidents involving use of force, then forward that information to council.
