Around the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, I was reading an article by Ms. Sandy Lee and raised a question, “Where do we go from here?”

First, let me say this; I was glad to hear that you write and article every year in honor of Dr. King, one of my heroes. This year Ms. Lee said she was speechless, well I’m not. If Dr. King was living today, he would be happy and sad. He would be happy to see a black president who cares about our country. Dr. King was big on ending war like Obama did in Iraq. He would be happy about the health care bill, along with equal pay for women.

Dr. King would be sad about all the killing that’s going on with these assault weapons. Especially the children in Newtown, Conn. Dr. King also would be sad if he took a trip to LaGrange. First stop would be at the Troup County Jail and see a majority of black people in the jail. He would talk to the inmates and find out they have been in jail for over a year with no bond. Dr. King’s stay in LaGrange would be long. He would want to know about racial profiling. Why so many black people are being shot with Tasers by police officers and being bitten by police dogs. He would talk to our city councilmen and NAACP and ask why they don’t do anything, knowing crimes have been committed in this city.

Before Dr. King would leave, he would talk to other people, among them judges, and let them know that we need to help our young people instead of locking them up for a habit they have, whether it is drugs or something else and that they really need help. Something the judges can also do is make them go back to school and get their GED. The last step before heading back to Atlanta, he would talk with the school superintendent and ask him why he is closing all of the schools in the black community, make it harder on the community. Schools are already closed, leaving lots of space for drugs, alcohol and smoking rehab centers, since a lot of kids are doing these things.
