FAYETTEVILLE – The Troup Tigers pulled off a riveting fourth-quarter comeback to beat Fayette County 47-37 Friday night.

After taking a 20-6 lead at the half, everything fell apart in the third quarter for Troup, and Fayette County found itself leading 37-20 after scoring a touchdown moments into the fourth quarter.

The Tigers were down, but far from out.

Troup outscored Fayette County 27-0 over the game’s final 10 minutes to pull off a huge Region 5-AAAA victory.

Troup (3-5 overall) improved to 3-2 in the region heading into next week’s showdown with LaGrange.

After falling behind by 17, Troup got a 1-yard touchdown run from Lemonta Truitt with 9:15 left, and Will Smith completed the two-point pass to Truitt to make it a 37-28 game.

With 3:35 remaining, Daryl Dunlap scored on a 17-yard run, and Fayette’s lead was down to 37-34.

Troup’s defense then made a huge play, stuffing Fayette County on fourth-and-one with 2:26 left.

Dunlap then ripped off a 42-yard run deep into Fayette territory, and Smith threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Truitt to give the Tigers a 40-37 lead.

Michael Mackfield then put a bow on the victory when he returned a fumble for a touchdown, and Will Bates’ extra point capped the scoring.

In the first half, Troup got an 8-yard touchdown run from Dunlap, a 69-yard scoring run from Ricky Frazier, and a 4-yard touchdown run from Bruce Danford to take a 20-6 lead.

Fayette County scored the next 21 points before Troup’s late rally.
