The local chapter of Literacy Volunteers for America will host its second “Riding for Reading” event, a motorcycle ride to benefit the agency, on Saturday.

Executive Director Charlotte Anderson and her volunteers are looking for riders for the event. Registration is from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at 210 Bull St., the parking lot next to Lafayette Society for Performing Arts.

Biscuits and coffee will be available before the motorcyclists take off, taking the scenic route to Warm Springs and Pine Mountain before returning to La-Grange. A Troup County sheriff’s deputy will escort the group on the ride.

The ride ends back in LaGrange at Loyd Presbyterian Church pavilion at 550 Upper Glass Bridge Road. A $20 registration fee includes lunch at the pavilion and a t-shirt.

Literacy Volunteers, supported by the United Way of West Georgia, provides one-on-one tutoring for those learning to read or those from other countries needing to brush up on English skills. The first ride, held in July, was the brainchild of John Greer. Greer’s wife, Ling, from China, now is on the literacy board of directors but first went to the organization needing an English tutor.

Ling Greer took her husband to the board’s Christmas party, where he asked Anderson about fundraisers. An avid motorcyclist, John Greer has participated in rides for various causes and suggested the ride for Literacy Volunteers. Not only did he help organize the first ride, he now serves on the literacy board with his wife.
