Anyone shopping for polo shirts on Whitesville Street might want to check their labels.
LaGrange police have seized an estimated $30,000 of counterfeit name-brand clothing and 15 pounds of marijuana from U.S. Urban Style at 804 Whitesville St.
The bust came after a tip from two men accused of possessing counterfeit goods at a nearby store.
The two said store owner Dexter Terry, 38, of Riverdale was in possession of and actively selling a large amount of counterfeit clothing, police Sgt. Robert Moore said.
Police obtained a warrant to search the store and found numerous suspicious goods hanging on racks for sale. A quality-control representative of brand-label clothing in Atlanta, who is trained to spot counterfeit items, was called for assistance.
“He can spot a fake pretty fast,” Moore said. “He pretty much immediately identified them as counterfeits when he began inspecting them. These goods were all made in China as counterfeits. Terry probably got them really cheap and was selling some of these shirts for $90 a piece.”
After inspecting the clothing, Moore asked Terry if he could search his Ford SUV behind the store. Terry consented.
“As soon as I opened one of the vehicle’s doors, I smelled a strong odor of unburnt marijuana,” Moore said. “Terry told me he had smoked some weed earlier in the car and then became very nervous. He then asked me not to search anymore, but I had already seen several bags of marijuana. We found 15 pounds in the SUV.”
Terry was charged with trafficking marijuana, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, theft by receiving stolen property, second-degree forgery and possession of counterfeit goods with intent to sell.
The men who provided the tip - Azair Tariq 24, and Shoab Tariq, 26, both of Hogansville - had been arrested Friday morning. Police served warrants for possession of counterfeit goods with intent to sell to the two employees of The Hood Store at 609 Whitesville St.
The two also were accused in September of operating illegal gambling machines at the former AK Food Mart on Whitesville Street, Moore said.
Police discovered that electronic gambling machines were being used in the back of the business. During an undercover investigation, both men were captured on video paying cash winnings to customers from a cash register on two occasions, police said.
Roughly 30 electronic gambling devices were removed from the store as well as various items associated with drug distribution, officers said.
