Although General Motors has filed for bankruptcy protection, All-Pro Chevrolet isn’t prepared to see a dropoff in sales, officials said.
“GM makes quality products and people will always want a quality product,” said Hardy Silcox, general manager of the dealership at 709 New Franklin Road in LaGrange. “There has been a slight dropoff in general with sales of all of our vehicles because of the state of the current economy. But there hasn’t been really a difference between GM and the other brands.”
All-Pro also sells other General Motors brands - Cadillac, Buick, GMC and Pontiac (which GM plans to discontinue) - as well as Hyundai.
GM, once the largest company in the world, said it hopes to emerge from reorganization within 90 days as a profitable entity with fewer employees, factories and dealers.
The company reported a debt of $172.81 billion and $82.29 billion in assets when it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Monday. The company will rely on $30 billion of additional financial assistance from the Treasury Department and $9.5 billion from Canada.
Since 2008, GM has subsided on $19.4 billion of money provided by the U.S. Treasury, when the company was first hit hard by gasoline prices and the economy.
Despite the recent struggles of the nation’s largest auto producer, Silcox said he hasn’t received too many concerns from customers.
“I have had a few ask me about it and if I thought it was anything to worry about or not,” Silcox said. “I told them not to worry because I believe GM will pull through this and become a more-efficient company for the better. Companies as big as GM don’t just go away. We still get as many people who buy their products as the other brands.”
Silcox urged automobile customers not to be swayed by the bankruptcy filing.
“GM has done so much for this country” he said. “According to numbers provided by GM, about 1 million people earn their living helping or working every day for GM. Also, about 457,000 GM retires and their spouses receive pension checks every month. We are talking about a huge contributor to this economy.”
Despite the company’s size, GM’s sales dropped 34 percent in April.
Should GM not pull out of its current situation, Silcox said All-Pro likely would switch to Hyundai as its main supplier because of its other dealership in La-Grange, All-Pro Hyundai at 224 Commerce Ave.
