With a $5,000 donation from Kia supplier Powertech to the West Point Police Department this year, they were able to purchase 20 new bikes for needy children in West Point.
In the previous two years of the WPPD’s bicycle giveaways, all of the donated bikes were those that were confiscated or found that had not been claimed in the city.
“In 2010, the first year of the program, I was notified of bikes that were confiscated or found and had not been claimed.” said West Point Councilwoman Sandra Thornton in a WPPD press release. “I offered the suggestion that they give the bikes to the children in West Point. Since that time, the police department has been really supportive of this idea.”
“West Point Police Department values community-oriented policing.” said Police Chief Jeffery Cato in the press release. “The importance of giving back to the community and establishing relationships with parents and children is what community-oriented policing is all about.”
Last year about nine bikes were given away, and Cato said that they are grateful for Powertech’s donation this year to be able to buy more bikes.
“It’s beautiful. It’s great just to see the expression on the kids’ faces,” he said.
In addition to the bicycles, the Walmart Distribution Center in LaGrange also donated $250 to purchase helmets for the children.
