The Chipley Woman’s Club (CWC) of Pine Mountain, will be holding its bi-annual Christmas Home Tour Saturday. This year, it will be a candle-light tour to be held from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m., tickets are still available.
In May, the CWC will have had its roots deeply planted in the Pine Mountain soil for 100 years. Originally starting off as a women’s garden club, the organization has diversified, while still keeping women working together for the benefit of the community.
At the beginning of each of the eight monthly meetings, the members are cordially greeted by a rotating team of their peers and are invited to help themselves at the artfully decorated refreshment table. The members then have time to talk with friends, catch up on club details and events and enjoy food before the club president calls the meeting to order.
This month’s meeting was called to order by president Julia Keating. After the Pledge of Allegiance, club business was taken care of and then the featured program was started. The music director of Christ the King Catholic Church, Hedy McDowell, together with club members Carol Woods and Sue Lambert led the group in an impressive array of Christmas songs and carols.
The Christmas Tour of Homes is one of the fundraising events that the club counts on to help provide the means for them to continue their community involvement.
“Saturday’s tour will feature five local homes, a church and a ‘Designer Showcase’ home which has rooms that have been decorated by different individual designers,” Keating said. “This is one of our biggest events, we usually have around 500 people go through the tour.”
The CWC provides support for a number of worthy causes and organizations. Each year a female Harris County high school senior is given a scholarship from the club. The club also supports the First Foundation for Childhood Literacy, Pine Mountain’s Veterans’ Day program that is sponsored by the Chipley Historical Center, Family Connections Back-to-School program, the Harris County FOCUS program, children’s Christmas gift program for foster children in Harris County and provide fundraising silent auction gift baskets for many additional organizations.
In addition to supporting their community, members say the most precious functions of the club is the fellowship and support that members offer each other.
“This club is just a wonderful way for all of the Pine Mountain women to get together. I moved here 13 years ago and I didn’t know anyone. I came to a meeting and I met many of the good friends who I have now,” said club member Carol Gateley.
The club also has trees outside of their clubhouse decorated with lights for the Christmas season. These trees are part of the Lights of Love celebration. Donations are made by club and community members to honor the life or memory of a loved one. This year’s Lights of Love is especially in the memory of Camilla Livingston, Fran White and Jeanne Koone, three CWC members who passed away this year.
Tickets for the CWC Christmas Tour of Homes are available for purchase today at Pine Mountain’s Tourist Center at 101 E. Broad St. in Pine Mountain and at Sweet Home Antiques at 149 N. Main St. in Pine Mountain. Tickets may also be purchased on the day of the tour at the CWC’s clubhouse at 132 McDougals Ave. in Pine Mountain.
