The Callaway Cavaliers wrapped up a special regular season in resounding fashion Friday night, thumping the Rockmart Yellow Jackets 41-14 before an appreciative home crowd at Callaway Stadium.

With the win, the Cavaliers completed a 9-1 regular season, including a 7-0 mark in Region 4-AAA play.

Callaway will be at home next week against Johnson-Savannah, the number four seed from Region 1-AAA.

“I’m really proud of our seniors, all 10 of them,” Callaway head coach Pete Wiggins said. “They’ve worked extremely hard to maintain their focus. It was a great week of practice, and they just led out football team. It was a great win, and getting that region championship, I’m just proud for the Callaway community and our football team.”

On a night with a ton of highlights, a play by Terry Godwin stood above the rest.

The Yellow Jackets were trailing 25-14 late in the second quarter, and they had a bit of momentum on their side after scoring a few minutes before to get within 11.

With less than a minute left in the half, Rockmart’s quarterback put the ball in the air, and Callaway sophomore defensive back Terry Godwin soared into the air and came down with an amazing one-handed interception.

When Godwin landed, he saw green in front of him, and he raced to the end zone for a 49-yard touchdown.

The two-point conversion attempt failed, and Callaway took a 31-14 lead at the break.

“It was instinct, and great coaching,” Godwin said of his pick.

And when he looked toward the end zone, Godwin said “everybody was on the left side of the field, and I just took it to the house.”

Wiggins said it was a huge play in the game.

“Rockmart had a little momentum in the second quarter, and he picked the ball off and took it in for a touchdown,” Wiggins said. “It’s kind of a momentum swing that carried us on through the game.”

The Cavaliers padded their lead early in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by quarterback Tez Parks.

Chase Freeman capped the scoring with a 22-yard field goal with 3:21 left in the third quarter.

Callaway jumped on top first, with Wilson Lindsey beating the Rockmart defense for a 49-yard touchdown run with 7:37 left in the first quarter.

Four minutes later, Eddie Culpepper ripped off a 59-yard scoring run, and Freeman’s extra point put the Cavaliers on top 13-0.

The lead grew on the first play of the second quarter, with Parks taking off on a 56-yard scoring run, and the Cavaliers were up 19-0.

Rockmart answered with a touchdown and a two-point conversion on its ensuing possession to make it 19-8, but Callaway came right back with another score.

After a long kickoff return by Godwin, Parks scored three plays later on an 8-yard run.

The two-point attempt was unsuccessful, and Callaway led 25-8 with 7:58 left in the half.

Rockmart got another touchdown and two-point conversion with 5:50 left in the half, and Callaway’s lead was down to 25-14.

Later in the half, the Cavaliers were unsuccessful on a fourth-down attempt, giving the Yellow Jackets the ball with 55 seconds left.

On the next play, Godwin delivered his electrifying touchdown, and the Cavaliers never looked back.
