Republican Tripp Foster won the election for the County Commission District 3 seat in Tuesday’s general election.
In January, Foster will take over the position of the current Commissioner Ken Smith, who did not run for re-election.
Out of the eight precincts in District 3, Foster had won over Williams in all but one. Williams, a West Point native, led in the West Point precinct. As of this morning, the unofficial tally listed Foster with 4,169 votes and Williams with 2,749, with Foster securing 60.14 percent of the total votes.
Foster, a fourth-generation Troup County resident, is a former Troup County firefighter and owner of a tree service. For the last six months he, along with his family and his campaign volunteers, said he has worked tirelessly in order to gain the confidence and support of the Troup County citizens.
Foster said he plans to work with the other County Commissioners to work for the good of the people in Troup County and be a strong voice for the people in his District. Tuesday night, Foster said he plans to make good on the promises that he had made to the people of Troup County throughout his campaign.
“I told all of my constituents that if I won I would hold town hall meetings once a quarter, that is four times a year for four years. I told them that to truly be the voice of the people you first have to be able to list to them, and I don’t believe in trying to read their minds, I will be holding these meetings,” Foster said.
Williams, among a group of supporters at the LaGrange-Troup County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night, said she was proud of what she accomplished and wouldn’t hold her head down in defeat.
“I have no regrets,” she said.
She thanked her supporters and family for helping her in the campaign and knew it was something she “needed to do, regardless of the outcome.”
“I am a firm believer in that, if it’s meant for me, it will be; if not, then it’s something else,” Williams told her supporters. “It’s just a matter of what.”
As the final results of the election was announced, Foster was relieved and thankful that all of the hard work paid off.
“I am most thankful for my family standing behind me through all of this,” Foster said. “My family and my moral compass that I have through my faith in God have helped me through this campaign. Outside of a lot of hard work, without the grace of God and the faith of the people, I could have never done it.”
Before January, Foster plans to celebrate at his home and have a “long-awaited, and well-deserved,” family vacation.
