Members of LaGrange Academy’s Beta and TNT clubs met at the school last Saturday and constructed six rain barrels as part of the US Green Building Council’s Green Apple Day of Service.
Several teachers joined the student volunteers to help construct and paint the barrels.
“We learned about day of service over the summer and wanted to be a part of this new initiative,” said LaGrange Academy Head of School Carl Parke.
“I threw a few ideas out to the students and they felt rain barrels would be a fun project that would also have a big impact on our campus”
Jill Sistino came to the school Sept. 26, and discussed the importance of water conservation in the Chattahoochee River basin, as well as describing the process of building the barrels. Several students said they did not realize how small the Chattahoochee watershed was, especially in comparison with the number of people who live within it. Sistino and the students also discussed several reasons why the Chattahoochee has been named one of the top three most endangered rivers in America.
After the painted barrels have had time to dry, they will be installed at several locations on the LaGrange Academy campus and will help provide water for the Lower School garden, an aquarium and a planned organic garden.
