Askey, a senior wrestler, has never lost a high-school match to another wrestler from Georgia, and he’s coming off a third consecutive state championship.
In pulling off the three-peat earlier this year, Askey pinned every one of his five opponents at the state meet.
Askey is back for one final go-around as a high-school wrestler, and this weekend, he’ll be going about his business in the LaGrange High gym as part of the Chattahoochee River Wrestling Association’s annual tournament.
The two-day event, which is the marquee event for the CRWA, will be held Friday and Saturday in the LaGrange High gym, and Askey will be the featured attraction.
“He’s probably one of the best wrestlers I’ve seen in a long, long time,” LaGrange head coach Scooter Weathers said. “He’s going to make history this year. He’s going to be a four-timer. He’s never lost a match in Georgia.”
Askey finished his first three seasons with a 151-0 record, and that included a 53-0 record a year ago.
As far as the chance to become one of the few wrestlers in Georgia to win four state titles, Askey said there’s “no pressure at all. I take it one match at a time.”
While Askey is clearly the top individual wrestler, Weathers said Alexander will be the team to beat.
“The front-runner is Alexander,” Weathers said. “They’re one of the top-two teams in Class AAAA this year. They just re-load.”
In addition to Alexander and Northgate, the other teams participating are LaGrange, Callaway, Newnan, East Coweta, Douglas County, Bowdon, Heard County and Hardaway.
LaGrange kicked off its varsity schedule on Saturday with a second-place showing in the Granger Duals, and it went 3-0 during a meet on Tuesday at Pike County.
“It’s a tough tournament, but if we wrestle to our seeds, we’re looking at getting top three,” Weathers said. “We’re young, but they’re really working hard.”
Callaway, meanwhile, also began its season in the Granger Duals, and it was winless in five matches.
The Cavaliers had to compete without seven wrestlers who’d yet to take their weight-assessment tests, though, and coach Kurt Napier said they’ll be back this weekend.
“I feel like they’re good wrestlers,” Napier said. “We’ll probably look a little different as a team this coming weekend.”
The CRWA, which was created several years back, includes schools located along the Chattahoochee River.
