NEWNAN — The fight against cancer has another ally in the Southeast. The Cancer Treatment Centers of America at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, a state-of-the-art regional medical facility, held its grand opening Tuesday evening.

The gala event was attended by hundreds of cancer patients, caregivers and members of the community. CTCA officially opened its doors on Aug. 15. The 226,000-square-foot, $150 million hospital is the fifth CTCA facility in the nation. The others are located in Chicago, Ill., Philadelphia, Penn., Phoenix and Tulsa, Okla. It is located across from the Ashley Park shopping center near the Newnan Crossing Bypass.

CTCA is the home of Patient Empowered Care, a unique care model combining state-of-the-art clinical treatments and technology with an array of supportive therapies such as nutrition therapy, naturopathic medicine, pain management, oncology rehabilitation, mind medicine and spiritual support to help manage side effects and improve quality of life. CTCA also encourages and empowers patients to take an active role in treatment decision-making.

Tampa resident Roger Farveau found CTCA three years ago when he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer.

“They removed part of my colon, but somehow the cancer advanced from stage one to stage four,” said Farveau. “The clinic I was going to in Tampa (Fla.) just gave me some literature and treated me with chemotherapy and radiation and sent me home.”

Farveau’s wife and caregiver Lynn heard of CTCA from her employer and Farveau went to the CTCA’s Phoenix facility for a second opinion. Within six months of treatment by CTCA, the tumors in Farveau’s body shrank to nothing.

“They built up my immune system and treated me with different types of proteins in addition to traditional cancer treatments,” Roger Farveau said. “They showed me that we can fight our cancer through proactive measures.”

Lynn Farveau said CTCA offered her an excellent support system to help her get through his battle with cancer.

The Farveau’s now volunteer for CTCA. They said they liked the location so much and want to continue to volunteer that they are moving to the area. They just purchased a home in Senoia.

CTCA senior vice president of operations David Kent said Newnan was chosen out of three finalists cities in the Atlanta area.

“With its proximity to Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, and its great amenities, Newnan was a logical choice,” said Kent. “Ultimately the patients chose this location.”

Kent said that CTCA’s care is based solely on the patients needs physically, mentally and spiritually.

“Every patient class has access to us,” said Kent. “They select us as much as we select them.”

The Newnan hospital includes 25 private inpatient rooms, surgical suites, state-of-the-art radiation and infusion therapy departments, an outpatient clinic, rehabilitation and physical therapy, a dining room, chapel, onsite residential accommodations for outpatients and their families, and even a koi pond and garden with a gazebo.

The grand opening allowed the public to tour the facility and a food-tasting tent was set up outside with food prepared by CTCA chefs. Gov. Nathan Deal addressed the welcomed CTCA to Georgia with a videotaped greeting and the event was capped off with a fireworks celebration.
