On October 25, 2012, at age 87, O.D. Martin went on to Glory. He took his leave from W GA Hospice, where his dear caregivers stood round with family & wept at his passing.
O.D. is survived by Martha Smith Anderson Martin, his wife of 8 sweet years, loving daughter Janet Martin Lockerbie (Brian), grandchildren B. David Lockerbie, Jr. & Lauren Lockerbie Hill (Danny), Anderson stepchildren Delane Knight (Ricky), Susan Hancock (Ray), Teresa Bain (Bill), & Kelly Anderson (Della), 11 stepgrandchildren, 5 stepgreatgrandchildren, & brother-in-law Raymond Smith (Leila).
He was buried back home in Alabama beside Odell Martin, his wife of 49 years. He was also predeceased by his father & mother, 3 brothers & 1 sister, all, including O.D., originating from Cullman, AL. His WWII Army Infantry & Army Air Force service began at 18. He fought in Bastogne, the Battle of the Bulge, & the Siegfried Line where he was grievously wounded. Among the honors he received were the Distinguished Service Badge, the WWII Victory Medal, 2 Bronze Stars, & a Purple Heart. After his military service he worked 18 years at Coca-Cola in Pontiac, MI & 15 years at Mitchell Grocery in Albertville, AL. He moved to LaGrange in 1994 to be with his daughter & family, & ultimately met wife-to-be Ms. Martha, with whom he greatly enjoyed his last years. O.D. was a lifelong & avid gardener who freely shared his bounty, particularly his wonderful tomatoes. He left behind many beloved friends, young & old, his best in the end, Phil Hanners of LaGrange. He was mentor to many & is greatly missed by all who knew him.
His Memorial & Visitation will be at W GA Hospice on Thursday, Nov. 8 from 5-7pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions to West Georgia Hospice, in care of Cathy Wiggins, 1510 Vernon Rd, LaGrange, GA 30240, will be appreciated.
