On senior night, one of LaGrange High’s most accomplished wrestlers held his team’s fate in his hands.

Devonta Williams, one of the seniors who was honored, took to the mat for the final match against Heard County needing at least a major decision to give his team enough points for the victory.

“I told him before he went out, you’ve got to major or pin for us to win,” LaGrange head coach Scooter Weathers said.

Williams came through and delivered a major victory, and those four points gave the Grangers a 40-39 win on Tuesday.

“It was just a senior stepping up and getting it done,” Weathers said.

There was no suspense in the other match, with LaGrange overwhelming Newnan 62-18.

The matches served as a tuneup for Saturday’s Area 5-AAAA tournament at LaGrange High, where the top four finishers in each weight class will advance to the state sectionals.

Tuesday also served as a way to honor the seniors and their families.

“It was a night for the seniors. We honored them,” Weathers said. “It was for them.”

The news wasn’t all good.

After the final match, the wrestlers decided to jup on Weathers in a celebratory dog pile.

Unfortunately for Weathers, his leg got turned the wrong way and he injured his knee.

“My leg was laying across people, and it went a way it wasn’t supposed to go,” Weathers said.

Weathers said he isn’t sure how severe the injury is.

For the moment, he’ll be getting around on crutches.

The Troup wrestling team, meanwhile, was supposed to host a three-team meet on Wednesday, but the meet was canceled because of concerns over the stormy weather in the area.

Troup will join LaGrange on the mat for Saturday’s area tournament.

Callaway’s wrestling team didn’t have any matches scheduled this week, and the Cavaliers will return to action on Friday for its area tournament at Central-Carroll.
