The Callaway High wrestling team was short-handed, and it showed Saturday in the Granger Duals.

While the Cavaliers had a number of outstanding results, they were unable to keep pace with the opposition en route to an 0-5 record.

The Cavaliers were unable to fill a number of weight classes, and that was worth six points for the opposition for each of those matches.

Callaway was without seven of its wrestlers, who’d yet to do a weight-assessment test necessary to take the mat.

Those wrestlers will be back when the Cavaliers return to the LaGrange High gym for the Chattahoochee River Wrestling Association this weekend.

“I feel like they’re good wrestlers,” Callaway head coach Kurt Napier said. “We’ll probalby look a little different as a team this coming weekend.”

For the men who were on the mat on Saturday, Napier said it was a positive experience.

“More than anything, the greatest benefit for our team was just our wrestlers getting to go out there and compete for the first time and just spend the time on the mat, and just see what they’re made of,” Napier said. “We had a few that had some personal success that I was proud of. We took some positives from it.”

Brandon Sutton, Callaway’s heavyweight standout, wrestled in two matches and had two pins.

Sutton is working his way into wrestling shape after finishing football on Friday.

“He was his dominant self,” Napier said.

Robert Naranjo and Sam Moseley each won three matches, and freshman Andrew Thomas won twice.
